The OT Field Services Tech II is an experienced field-based technical professional responsible for independently performing troubleshooting, corrective maintenance, repairs, functional testing, and field implementation activities for Operational Technology (OT) systems supporting RWE’s power-generation assets.
Working within defined processes and approved procedures, the role addresses moderately complex faults involving OT field devices, communication links, basic network-connected equipment, and power supplies. The Tech II interprets OT diagrams, network drawings, wiring schematics, equipment manuals, and device parameters to diagnose issues and implement practical technical solutions.
The role coordinates field activities with Operations, OT support, Engineering, project teams, and vendors, including access arrangements, outage windows, planned maintenance, and small equipment modifications. The Tech II supports commissioning and operational handover by verifying installation, connectivity, configuration, and functional performance; maintains accurate work and asset documentation; contributes feedback on recurring issues and improvement opportunities; and provides informal guidance to junior technicians in safe work practices, troubleshooting, and documentation standards.
Role Responsibilities:
- Troubleshooting and Incident Resolution
- Independently troubleshoot, repair, and perform corrective maintenance on OT field systems, including field devices, local control panels, communication links, basic network-connected equipment, and power supplies
- Diagnose moderately complex faults involving multiple components or intermittent issues within a single system
- Use OT diagrams, basic network drawings, wiring schematics, equipment manuals, device parameters, logs, and standard test equipment to identify faults and recommend solutions
- Prioritize work based on safety, operational impact, equipment criticality, and available access or outage windows
- Escalate complex, cross-system, cybersecurity, or recurring high-impact issues to OT, Engineering, Operations, or vendor specialists as appropriate
- Provide clear updates on work status, technical findings, risks, and required follow-up actions
- Maintenance Execution and Changes
- Execute approved device replacements, repairs, configuration updates, and routine communications maintenance in accordance with site procedures and change-management requirements
- Review assigned work packages, risk assessments, procedures, test steps, and required materials before beginning work
- Coordinate field access, outage windows, tools, spare parts, and standard vendor support with Operations and OT support teams
- Perform functional testing after maintenance or approved changes, including connectivity, operating parameters, communications, and handover to Operations
- Stop work and escalate when unsafe conditions, unexpected technical issues, or unapproved scope changes are identified
- Commissioning and Project Support
- Support commissioning of new equipment, replacements, and small site modifications under the direction of Engineering, Project Management, OT, or senior Field Services personnel
- Verify field installation, labeling, connectivity, basic configuration, and functional performance against approved drawings, procedures, and work instructions
- Participate in pre-commissioning checks, functional testing, punch-list resolution, and operational handover activities
- Identify field constraints, installation deviations, documentation gaps, and maintainability concerns, escalating them to the appropriate lead or project representative
- Safety and Compliance
- Follow and promote RWEA safety procedures, including lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), site-access protocols, electrical-safety requirements, PPE, toolbox talks, pre-job briefings, and risk assessments
- Maintain a safety-first approach in all field activities; production schedules and technical urgency do not take priority over safe execution
- Stop work and immediately escalate unsafe conditions, inadequate controls, or conditions outside the approved work scope
- Ensure work is performed in compliance with site operating requirements, approved procedures, and applicable cybersecurity and asset-management controls
- Coordination and Communication
- Coordinate independently with plant and control-room Operations, OT support, Engineering, and vendors for standard troubleshooting, maintenance, and planned field activities
- Support outage coordination and access planning to reduce downtime and production impact
- Attend pre-job briefings, outage coordination meetings, and post-job reviews as required
- Provide practical field input regarding workability, safety, equipment condition, and execution risks
- Support vendor and contractor activities by confirming site requirements, safety expectations, work quality, and documentation needs
- Documentation and Asset Management
- Execute assigned field work orders and accurately document completed activities in designated maintenance and asset-management systems
- Maintain accurate equipment status, location, serial-number, configuration, and condition information
- Record equipment installed, removed, replaced, modified, tested, or returned to service
- Document test results, defects, deficiencies, outstanding actions, and handover details
- Update applicable drawings, wiring information, equipment records, commissioning checklists, and as-built documentation in accordance with established processes
- Technical Coaching
- Provide informal guidance to Field Services Tech I and less-experienced technicians in safe work practices, basic troubleshooting, use of field documentation, and documentation standards
- Share practical knowledge of site-specific OT architectures, field devices, local panels, field buses, communication protocols, and maintenance practices
- Contribute feedback for updates to work instructions, maintenance procedures, troubleshooting guides, and test steps
- Support a consistent approach to safe, accurate, and reliable field execution across sites
