Senior Legal Counsel Procurement / Construction (JP)

Your role


We are looking for an experienced, highly motivated and self-confident Legal Counsel supporting our fast-growing renewable energies business in Japan and other APAC countries with a strong focus on wind offshore.

As a Legal Counsel within the  Construction & Procurement Law Team  you will work alongside other members of the RWE Renewables Legal Team and engage with other support functions to deliver a holistic and streamlined service to the business of RWE Renewables in the APAC region. You will  closely work with the local Tokyo team in Japan and provide any support relating to your expertise area.


Your future plans


  • Provide legal support to any procurement activities of the RWE Renewables business in all technologies worldwide (except for Americas) with a focus on construction and operation in Japan
  • Be one of the key legal advisors handling all legal matters of RWE Renewables’ renewable energy projects in Japan and other APAC countries
  • Advise the business on procurement contracts, including development of drafts and negotiation of related documentation, such as turbine supply agreements (TSAs), balance of plant agreements (BoPs), EPC(I) & turnkey contracts, purchase agreements for components, O&M agreements, service agreements and vessel charter contracts
  • Provide support (including liaising with external counsel) in related dispute resolution situations
  • Drive standardisation and process improvement initiatives
  • Develop non-standard, customised solutions when needed to address complex project challenges
  • Establish and nurture effective cross-functional and cross-cultural working relationships with legal but also business colleagues in the regions of interest and the wider Group


Your profile


  • Lawyer qualified in the law of Japan, further qualification in further jurisdiction is beneficial
  • At least 5 years’ experience of working in construction and procurement law in an international law firm or company, preferably in the renewables energy sector
  • Outstanding commercial, technical and strategic understanding
  • Organisational, analytical and communication skills
  • Customer centrism and solution-oriented mindset
  • High level of engagement, enjoy working in an international team including travel
  • Flexibility and ability to work professionally and accurately under pressure
  • Personal drive, willingness to take initiative and high level of commitment
  • Very good command of Japanese (native language) and English language is essential
  • Experience of living and studying or working abroad, e.g. in Europe, is an advantage
