The Senior Director of Federal Government Affairs serves as a strategic leader responsible for shaping, advancing, and protecting the company’s interests before the U.S. federal government. This role leads engagement with senior policymakers, federal agencies, congressional offices, industry influencers, and thought leaders on priority legislative and regulatory matters. The Senior Director will provide expert guidance to executive leadership, shape policy outcomes, and ensure the organization is positioned as a trusted, credible voice on issues that impact the business.
This role requires exceptional business acumen, deep policy expertise, and the ability to operate with agility in a fast‑paced political environment. Working in close partnership with internal and external stakeholders, the Senior Director champions a “one team” mindset, driving alignment and enabling enterprise‑wide policy strategies.
Role Responsibilities:
- Serve as an advisor to the VP of Federal Government Affairs
- Proactively gather and assess early, pre decisional legislative and regulatory intelligence and deliver actionable insights across the organization
- Monitor and analyze federal policy developments to help the business anticipate shifts and shape outcomes
- Build and sustain strong bipartisan relationships with senior government officials, agencies, and influential stakeholders
- Represent the company in high level policy discussions, meetings, and coalitions
- Advise executive leadership on political and risks, opportunities, and strategic implications
- Drive cross functional alignment on advocacy strategies by influencing without authority in a complex, matrixed environment
- Clearly communicate complex policy issues through concise briefings, updates, and recommendations
- Foster a collaborative, agile, “one team” culture with internal partners across the enterprise
- Represent the company with professionalism, integrity, and credibility consistent with top-tier government affairs standards
Job Requirements and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in public policy, political science, law, or related field required; advanced degree preferred
- Minimum 10 years of federal government affairs, public policy, Capitol Hill, or agency; minimum 5 years with relevant corporate/association experience required
- Demonstrated track record of influencing federal policy outcomes and building trusted relationships at the highest levels of government
- Deep understanding of the federal legislative and regulatory process
- Ability to quickly interpret complex policy landscapes, connect them to business implications, and inform high‑impact decision‑making
- Proven ability to develop and execute political strategies to achieve high priority business outcomes
- Ability to communicate effectively to multiple levels in the organization, including executive leadership
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to work in ambiguity and communicate effectively with team members
- Operates with a collaborative, “one team” approach; naturally connects people, priorities, and policy risks/opportunities across the organization
Work Environment:
This position is an office-based role with some travel and visits to other RWE Americas offices and field locations. The employee must be able to sit, walk, or stand for long durations of time.

Pay range: The annual base salary range for this position in Washington DC is $215,000 - $275,000. The listed salary range represents our good faith estimate for this position and represents the range for new hire salaries across all U.S locations. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. RWE considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s education & work experience, training & certifications, and key skills as well as market and business considerations at the time of the offer.
