Asian Power Analyst

Company: RWE Supply & Trading GmbH

Location: Singapore, Singapore (SG)

We are looking for a new and committed team member.

RWE Supply & Trading is a leading Global commodity trading house with a growing presence in AsiaPacific.

The AsiaPacific power markets are rapidly changing. De-carbonization, renewables expansion, liberalization and deregulation will further accelerate market changes, but also security of supply, cost efficiency and primary fuels dynamics remain important price drivers. The dominant Asian markets China, Japan and South Korea move global fuel prices with major demand coming from coal- and gas-fired power generation.

Our Global Analysis team continuously monitors market news and fundamentals which help us to identify trading opportunities. To support and further develop our insight of Asian power markets, we are looking for an analyst dedicated to this topic.

In this role, the analyst will build a solid understanding of supply and demand dynamics in the Asian power markets. This includes understanding of power demand drivers as well as detailed insight into conventional and renewable power generation. A major focus will be constant monitoring and assessment of news and regulations related to the Asian power industry. After compiling meaningful time series for the supply and demand balance, the analyst will implement these findings into a power stack model.

With timely and high quality analysis, this role will enhance our existing analytical framework on Asian power markets and contribute directly to our trading decisions. The analyst will communicate the findings directly to the traders and global analyst team on a regular basis in order to optimise the results, operate collaboratively and continuously identify improvement opportunities in relation to the data and information produced.

Your tasks:

  • Collecting data about the existing and future supply-demand balances for the Asian power markets
  • In depth analysis of supply (e.g. conventional and renewable generation) and demand factors (e.g. demand growth and load shape)
  • Compile historic time series and future projections for all relevant power model inputs
  • Work together with our market data team to import and process market data
  • Condense all relevant information into an Asian power/energy balance together with the respective trading desk and contribute to a global power/energy overview with the analysts in Europe.
  • Building up fuel stack models to understand marginal power prices and fuel switching dynamics
  • Monitoring news flows and regulatory policy changes and analysing their impacts on the power and fuel markets
  • Communicating findings directly to our global analyst team and traders on a regular basis
  • Visiting counterparties and attending conferences to acquire additional information for market research and liaison purposes

Your profile:

  • Detailed knowledge of the Asian power complex and other commodities in the energy sector (coal, gas, etc.)
  • First relevant working experience in fundamental modelling in an energy trading environment
  • University Degree in Economics, Finance, Energy, Mathematics, Physics or equivalent
  • Very strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to transfer knowledge between Analysis and Trading with an interdisciplinary approach
  • Excellent IT skills in the MS Windows environment (particularly Excel, Access)
  • Experience working with large data sets and interfacing with databases (e.g. Python, R, SQL)
  • Language skills: very fluent in English, further language skills in Mandarin, Japanese or Korean are advantageous
  • Very good team player, high level of self-motivation and flexibility, ability to work in a trading environment and to meet tight deadlines.
