The Wind Farm Technician is responsible for supporting the overall operations and maintenance of one or more wind farms and all related facilities to assure safety and maximize availability in accordance with the Operations mission. This role is responsible for the safe execution of scheduled maintenance, troubleshooting and repair activities, training, and safety exercises. This job also maintains accountability and readiness of plant tools, equipment, and vehicles; provides technical guidance to the O&M team; tracks, and maintains records of service activities both scheduled and unscheduled through the digital maintenance management system; and helps maintain the work ethic and culture of the plant O&M team.  Previous experience on the GE1X and Gamesa G87 platform is preferred.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adherence to the company’s values and behaviors as defined by the RWECE philosophy
  • Assure that all operation and maintenance activities are performed in a safe manner consistent with policies and procedures established for the wind farm site.  This includes wearing essential safety equipment, including a personal fall arrest system, as well as identifying potential hazards on the job
  • Pass physical fitness tests required to maintain Global Wind Organization Certification
  • Climb wind towers and access wind turbines to perform maintenance tasks
  • Lift, carry, and transport essential equipment, tools, and materials to job site
  • Monitor the activities of maintenance contractors and ensure corrective actions when appropriate
  • Assist in conducting acceptance and performance tests on systems and equipment following planned maintenance or outages
  • Train and guide less experienced operations and maintenance site personnel
  • Perform safety and other wind farm related tasks when assigned and fill in as back up to personnel at other RWECE sites when necessary
  • Assist with turbine maintenance including services, major component work and replacement, and troubleshooting
  • Assist with Balance of Plant procedures as needed, including substation and collection system maintenance

 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform all other duties assigned as may be required from time to time

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 4 years of work experience in operations and/or maintenance in power generation, transmission and/or distribution
  • A 2 year or 4 year college degree from an accredited school, other than correspondence or on-line, in a technical hard science (engineering, physics, power, or closely similar) may substitute for 2 years of experience. A current journeyman or master electrician license may substitute for 2 years of experience. A wind technician certificate program can substitute for 1 year of experience

 

Education:

  • Associate degree in Sciences or related field from an accredited school preferred

 

Working Environment:

  • (Irregular hours, travel requirements, hazardous conditions, multiple worksites, etc.)
  • Wind Farm site location including work in and around energized wind turbine generators and balance of plant equipment (substation, pad mount transformers, etc.). The work will occur within an office, warehouse, and outdoors
  • The work will require irregular work hours depending upon the required response of site operations to address the unpredictable needs of the wind farm
  • Travel up to 35% of the time

  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems and turbine failures, understand and communicate root causes and work to resolve issues. Good communication skills. Must be a team player

  • Initiative – Able to work with minimum supervision and make decisions for all issues related to his/her discipline(s) with limited and/or available information
  • Technical/Functional Knowledge - Able to discern problems and work diligently to find acceptable solutions
  • Flexibility – Adjust readily to changes in direction and work priorities while working efficiently to complete assigned tasks and achieve goals

  • Must be able to maintain a personal weight limitation of 270 lbs
  • Must be able to sit, walk or stand for long duration of time
  • Must be able to climb wind towers on a daily basis.  During this task, employee must be able to open/close hatch doors and identify potential safety hazards
  • Must have the ability to identify and distinguish colors
  • Must be able to transfer fifty (50) pounds from a thirty-five inch platform to the floor
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds for up to fifteen (15) feet
  • Must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds from ground to brow height
  • Must be able to lift and transfer up to fifty (50) pounds to a thirty-five (35) inch platform
  • Must be able to lift and carry twenty-five (25) pounds with one hand up to fifteen (15) feet
  • Must be able to crouch, kneel, or ½ kneel for up to five (5) minutes at a time to perform maintenance tasks in low areas
  • Must be able to perform fine motor tasks, such as screwing or unscrewing nuts and bolts, while reaching around and over objects
  • Must be able to balance to: (1) work in closed and small swaying areas on top of and within wind towers, and (2) walk across small surface areas to access areas within wind turbines
  • Must be able to military, belly, or back crawl up to fifteen (15) feet to access the nose cone area of wind turbines
  • Must be able to step or climb up onto platform at a height of thirty-five (35) inches, with or without support
