Shift Operations Technician


Operate a 386MW CCGT Power station at Kings Lynn, providing flexibility delivered electricity to the UK. Each shift consists of 2 operations technicians and a shift team leader. The shift team are responsible for site operations whilst on site, so must work cohesively and safely.


Due to the nature of the requirement to provide flexible electricity, the demands of the operator can be quite driven and the individual needs the ability to manage an ever changing process environment, and also during reactive periods able to dynamically think and assess situation, ensuring the right safe and commercial decisions are made.


When available the operations team enact maintenance and perform proactive maintenance tasks.


Collaborating with the Shift Engineer Team Leader you would be responsible for carrying out front line plant operations and maintenance as required by the location on a sophisticated and diverse range of equipment. Operations are on a 24/7/365 basis to meet the fast paced scheduled and often-unscheduled production targets, this ensures the safe production of electricity to meet customer requirements, best business value and compliance with company and statutory requirements.


The Role


Key responsibilities include:


  • Assisting in advising fuel requirements and operates the plant to CEOL requirements or as instructed by NGC/TRANSCO and assists in ensuring HS&E requirements are aligned with.
  • To work with high technology plant and equipment, including industrial Gas Turbines (GT), Steam Turbines (ST), Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG), electrical generators, High Voltage electrical equipment and plant control systems.
  • Capable of operating with limited supervision.
  • Operating in an encouraging team environment.
  • Conducts plant checks such as chemistry analysis and routine inspections.
  • Maintain environmental and Safety standards on site, working within HSE policies and procedures.
  • Operates plant and conducts tier one maintenance on all designated plant areas (inside and outside duties) with a focus on Health, Safety and Environmental (HS&E) compliance and availability, taking actions to deliver customer happiness and achievement of business plan.
  • Responsible for accurately maintaining station and operating logs in a timely manner for statutory compliance purposes.
  • Assist in operating the Permit to Work (PTW) system at an authorised person level with the application of the safety rules, work release and emergency procedures to ensure compliance with site procedures and undertake the duties of a designated person.
  • Interacts with NGC/ Transco and Centrica Energy Operations Limited (CEOL) in respect of energy requirements and supply to ensure awareness and understanding by all.
  • Communicating with the trading team to optimise the performance of the plant, supervising plant efficiency and performance, and advising on improvements.
  • Ensures full awareness of the technical condition of the asset and is proactive in ensuring that any issues that may affect the HS&E, production capability availability are accurately advised and acted upon.
  • Support and handle contractors ensuring that they work safely
  • Collects operational and HS&E data for inclusion into station logs and formal reports for use by internal and statutory bodies e.g. Environmental Agency. Responsible for accurately maintaining station and operating logs in a timely manner for statutory compliance purposes.
  • Performs routine maintenance, inspections, testing to plant items to ensure readiness for return to service and later efficient production, environmental and safety compliance subject to relative competency and asset requirements.
  • Provide 1st line of support for plant breakdowns, and undertaking maintenance work when required
  • Ensures that a comprehensive and thorough handover takes place between shift teams to maintain continuity of safe operations and ensure ongoing knowledge of work activities.
  • In addition to being appropriately authorised within safety rules, aligning with site and company safety rules, policies, business procedures and carrying out duties relating to HS&E requirements of the operating activities including: On a shift basis takes action to ensure Legionella risk is properly handled & carrying out audits.


The Person


Owing to the technical nature of this role you must hold a minimum of ONC (or equivalent experience) in an appropriate engineering subject.

An HNC or equivalent is desirable or having completed a recognised formal training programme or apprenticeship to achieve technician status (C&G parts I, II &III). It is beneficial to have previous experience within the power generation industry.
