This is a unique career opportunity for a seasoned legal expert to play a pivotal role in RWE’s growth in Australia. Our legal & compliance team advises the company’s business on all legal, regulatory & compliance matters in Australia and drives RWE’s mission “our energy for a sustainable life” by enabling innovative business ideas for RWE’s renewables and commodities trading businesses in Australia. This role involves working closely with senior management and commercial functions in Australia when further developing both RWE’s renewable energy commercialisation and commodity trading businesses in Australia. While providing legal, regulatory and compliance advice locally in Australia, you will have complete access to support from RWE’s global Legal & Compliance functions where required. 

What you will be doing: 

• As the senior legal expert in Australia, you provide legal, regulatory and compliance advice and support to RWE Supply & Trading Australia and RWE Trading Services Australia’s Board of Directors and to the commercial team in connection with the commercial management and hedging of the RWE Renewables Australia’s renewable energy projects as well as the proprietary trading activities in Australia. RWE Trading Services Australia is licensed as an Australian Financial Services Licensee by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, while RWE Supply & Trading Australia is RWE’s non-licensed trading company in Australia.
• You ensure that the legal, regulatory & compliance requirements for RWE Trading Services Australia and its affiliates for the commercial management of the renewable assets and for commodity trading in Australia are in place and support the business in achieving the commercial goals in a regulated environment, such as working under an Australian financial services licence.    
• You will ensure the legal and regulatory integrity of the commercialisation and trading business is maintained, by initiating, managing and monitoring compliance with Australian law and regulations as well as RWE group internal policies and principles.
• You manage the legal and regulatory risks and opportunities in your area of responsibility and are the legal expert within your remit with recourse to  external counsel where required. 
• You oversee the effectiveness of compliance programs and processes for compliance with Australian legal obligations and support local regulatory reporting and counterparty review processes.

Who you will be working with: 

• You manage the in-house and external legal support for the commercialisation and trading business in Australia. Initially, you will be the only legal counsel at RWE Supply & Trading Australia on the ground, but you will be able to rely on the support of RWE Supply & Trading’s experienced global Legal & Compliance functions and working relationships with the other RWE legal functions in Australia. 
• The Head of the UK/Global Unit of RWE Supply & Trading GmbH abroad (whilst you are taking responsibility for the day to day operations). 
• The Board of Directors of RWE Trading Services Australia and RWE Supply & Trading Australia and commercial functions as well as with functional in-house experts locally and abroad, both within the global RWE Legal & Compliance function and other functions.   

Your powerful skills:

• You graduated in law and have substantial relevant working experience, either as counsel in a law firm or working in-house or within a relevant public or regulatory organisation.
• Preferably, you have experience working in the energy sector, in particular either in renewables or commodity trading and be comfortable to advise on  a substantial proportion of your day to day work without recourse to external counsel. 
• You have experience in a regulated environment, such as working under an Australian financial services licence, in relation to Australian carbon credit units and market traded or over-the-counter energy derivatives.  
• You are self-motivated to drive the business and deliver results. 
• You are used to advising stakeholders as equals, do not shy away from conflict and are confident to defend your position also when challenged. 
• You enjoy working in a global context, including in cross-functional teams.
• You have exceptional communication skills and proven relationship management skills.
