Data Governance & Platform Engineer d/f/m

Location(s):

Essen, NW, DE, 45141

RWE AG
To start as soon as possible, full time / part time, permanent

As Data Governance & Platform Engineer you are the technical owner mesh. You build and operate the systems that make data products discoverable, high-quality, lineage-traced and access-controlled and turn governance and classification from policy into enforced, automated controls in the platform.

About the role

  • Build and evolve the enterprise data-quality framework, including automated data contracts, validation rules, quality controls, and pipeline quality gates, with proactive monitoring and alerting.
  • Implement end-to-end lineage and metadata automation across the lakehouse and catalogue (Unity Catalog, Microsoft Purview), so lineage is captured automatically, not maintained by hand.
  • Drive data access control and classification as code, leveraging fine-grained security, masking, tagging, and identity-based governance.
  • Automate the data-product lifecycle: templates, CI/CD for data products, catalogue registration, and the technical checks that certify a product as compliant before publish.
  • Implement classification and sharing rules technically (open-by-default internally, masking / restriction for contractual and personal data), in partnership with Cyber and Data Protection.
  • Instrument adoption and quality telemetry (usage, freshness, quality scores) so shareability and the reuse-credit model run on real data.
  • Support domain teams with the tooling and reference implementations to stand up compliant data products quickly.

Job requirements and experience

  • University degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology or related field.
  • Hands-on working experience in Data pipeline and Data mesh design in a regulated decentral environment.
  • Strong knowledge of data engineering: Python and advanced SQL, Spark, pipeline / orchestration tooling (Airflow, dbt or equivalent), CI/CD and IaC.
  • Deep Databricks / Unity Catalog skills: governance features, access control, lineage, tagging; plus Microsoft Purview or an equivalent catalogue/lineage stack.
  • Expertise in Data-quality engineering (data contracts, validation frameworks) and observability.
  • Know How in Access control and security engineering: RBAC/ABAC, row / column-level security, masking, encryption and key handling, identity integration (Entra ID).
  • Working knowledge of GDPR, data classification and KRITIS translated into technical controls (policy-as-code mindset).
  • Enough architecture literacy to partner closely with the Lead Data Architect; pragmatic and delivery-focused.

Today, RWE is one of the world's leading renewable energy companies. With our growth strategy we are setting the pace and investing billions of euros every year – above all in the expansion of offshore and onshore wind, solar energy and battery storage. Our diverse portfolio is perfectly complemented by our global energy trading business. With our mix of renewable and flexible generation, as well as a broad pipeline of new-build projects, we are well positioned to meet the growing global demand for electricity, particularly driven by further electrification and artificial intelligence. At the same time, we are contributing to the decarbonisation of the energy system. The reduction of our carbon emissions is in line with the 1.5°C climate goal of the Paris Agreement, and we are phasing out coal responsibly by 2030. By 2040, RWE aims to achieve net-zero, fully embracing our purpose ‘Our energy for a sustainable life’.
