(Senior) System Engineer SCADA d/f/m
Essen, NW, DE, 45141
RWE Supply & Trading GmbH
To start as soon as possible, full time / part time, permanent
IT provides the information systems that underpin RWE's global trading, origination and optimisation activities. In CAO CE Embedded IT, we connect commercially optimised asset dispatch with robust, secure and highly available SCADA operations.
As part of KAIROS, RWE is procuring and implementing a scalable SCADA landscape for Central Europe that consolidates today's systems and supports a heterogeneous fleet of generation and flexibility assets. The role combines system engineering, SCADA expertise, secure integration and stakeholder coordination across business, IT, architecture and vendors.
About the role
- Configure, maintain and enhance SCADA and automation solutions for KAIROS and the existing asset control landscape, resolve operational issues and implement technical changes to support reliable 24/7 operation and the transition from legacy systems.
- Analyse commercial, operational and regulatory requirements and implement them as system configurations, technical specifications, work items, acceptance criteria and test cases.
- Implement, configure, test and troubleshoot interfaces between SCADA, upstream RWE office systems, TSOs, assets, RTUs and internal services such as UDO, Refline calculation and Switching Engine.
- Onboard assets and pools by creating and applying templates, import mechanisms, visualisations, signal extensions and operational diagnostics for a high-volume asset landscape.
- Configure and verify data point handling for measurements, setpoints, commands and alarms, including quality status, plausibility checks, watchdogs, sign conventions and communication logging.
- Deploy and operate SCADA services across cloud and on-premises environments, implement network segmentation and redundancy, and maintain monitoring, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code and ISMS-aligned operational controls.
- Develop, test, document and release technical solutions in close cooperation with business stakeholders, vendors, Enterprise Architecture, developers and operations, and follow agreed agile delivery and change processes.
Job requirements and experience
- Senior System Engineer mindset: able to work autonomously on high-complexity business requirements in critical business areas, with strong ownership of system stability and delivery outcomes.
- Deep experience in SCADA, automation or industrial control landscapes, including productive operation, migration, troubleshooting and integration with asset-side control systems.
- Strong ability to analyse business processes, data flows and system dependencies and convert them into scalable, secure and maintainable system designs.
- Hands-on knowledge of industrial communication and integration patterns, ideally including IEC 60870-5-104, ICCP, Modbus, RTU connectivity, TSO interfaces and asset communication protocols.
- Experience with system design for complex, highly available services, including redundancy, monitoring, logging, incident/problem management and operational readiness for 24/7 support.
- Practical knowledge of software development using programming languages such as C#/.NET, Angular and scripting languages such as KornShell and PowerShell, with the ability to create maintainable automation, integration components and operational tools.
- Experience with modern AI-assisted development workflows to accelerate requirements refinement, code generation, refactoring, debugging, test creation and technical documentation, while retaining human ownership of architecture, security, code review and production quality.
- Good working knowledge of cloud and infrastructure engineering, preferably AWS, container platforms, Terraform or CloudFormation, Azure DevOps and CI/CD practices.
- Ability to collaborate with internal and external suppliers, challenge solution designs constructively, document decisions and communicate complex topics clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Fluent English and German skills, with the confidence to facilitate workshops, requirements reviews, show-and-tells and cross-functional alignment sessions.
Advantageous, but not essential
- Knowledge of cybersecurity and compliance requirements for critical infrastructure and SCADA environments, including ISMS/ISO 27001-aligned practices.
- Experience with modern observability and monitoring tooling, for example ELK, Zabbix, CloudWatch or comparable platforms.
RWE is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment – we value your passion, your willingness to learn and your desire to thrive. Even if you don't have all the above skills, need flexible working arrangements or other adjustments not yet listed here, we'd love to hear from you.
