Responsibilities:
The Senior Electrical Engineer will be part of RWE Renewables’ Project Engineering Department for Europe North with a focus on Ireland and the UK. The main focus of the role is to support project Development and Construction with responsibilities including:
- Advising the Development teams on Grid connection solutions, providing cost estimates and assessing the impact of connecting projects to the Grid, advising on creative ways to overcome grid-related issues and working to proactively identify suitable opportunities based on a sound technical understanding of the Irish and UK grid networks.
- assessing grid connection requirements for new projects, preparation of grid applications and managing the offers, agreements and transmission liabilities in close collaboration with the Development teams.
- Planning and coordination of internal and external resources for technical due diligence of wind farm, solar PV and energy storage acquisitions in terms of grid, analyzing simulation results, technical solutions and risks, making proposals for technical and commercial decisions.
- Analyzing electrical system behavior and Grid Code Compliance for wind farm, solar PV and energy storage projects.
- making recommendations about future-proofing the development pipeline to enable the potential future delivery of ancillary services
In addition to working in the early phases of our onshore wind farm, solar PV and energy storage projects, the Senior Electrical Engineer will also be responsible for ensuring a robust and optimized design of the project’s electrical system supporting on all aspects of the generation and transmission system up to the grid interface point including:
- Leading the design process of the wind farm, solar PV and energy storage projects including managing external partners/contractors in order to ensure Grid Code Compliance.
- Creating simulation models for electrical systems and performing load flow and short circuit calculations, analyzing dynamic stability and harmonics stability as well as protection concepts.
- Developing and issuing Request for Proposals (RFPs) for engineering work and E-BoP scope of works, evaluating the submissions and making recommendations on their selection.
- Supporting the negotiation and procurement process for the E-BoP aspect of the project.
- Ensuring close liaison with technical experts in RWE Renewables’ Project Engineering and engineers working on similar projects to ensure a shared knowledge is effectively utilized on the project.
Requirements:
- A sound technical understanding of the Irish and UK grid networks and the ability to quickly learn about grid networks in other countries within Northern Europe.
- A good understanding of ancillary services markets and the ability to make recommendations about the processes for accessing ancillary services revenues and the technical design changes necessary for wind farm, solar PV and energy storage projects to do this.
- Experience of making grid connection applications, assessing offers and managing connection agreements.
- An understanding of the Transmission and Distribution Operators grid investment and consenting programs and budgets and a detailed understanding of their network models (opportunities and weaknesses).
- The ability to form relationships with key stakeholders such as Eirgrid, ESB,CRU etc .
- Relevant work experience and above-average expertise in design and construction of onshore wind farm, solar PV and energy storage projects.
- Comprehensive experience with relevant software programs such as MS Office, PowerFactory (load flow, short circuit, protection, RMS and EMT simulations), PSS/E, PSCAD.
- Willingness and ability to travel to Northern European Countries, mainly within Ireland and UK but also occasionally (1-2 times per year) to the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Poland. Travel is not anticipated to be more than 15% of the working time in total.
