The Senior Engineer I, Onshore Wind Turbine Systems, will be responsible for assessing WTG (Wind Turbine Generator) technology and supporting the procurement process through pre-selection assessment, contract technical negotiation, and technical due diligence.
As RWECE continues to expand its portfolio, this position will play a crucial role in supporting the development phase of projects and being the main technical interface to various commercial teams.
Role Responsibilities:
- Technical lead for WTG (Wind Turbine Generator) procurement in RWE’s onshore wind projects, supporting tendering, evaluating offers, and managing the pre-selection process of WTGs
- Prepare and develop technical requirements for RFP's of WTG by collaborating with engineering, operations, and other project stakeholders
- Lead technical negotiations of projects to execute purchase contracts with WTG OEMs in close alignment with multi-disciplinary teams (i.e., various engineering groups, procurement, construction, and operation)
- Perform the Turbine Due Diligence and reporting for selected WTGs while coordinating with engineering, construction, and operations
- Develop and maintain a technical risk/opportunity registry related to the selected technology and for development projects. Including but not limited to defining and preparing plans for risk/opportunity mitigation strategies
- Main technical interface between various commercial teams (e.g., Investment & Valuation, Partnering, Structured Finance, Insurance, and Tax department), by having ownership of technical information and assessment of all technical aspects related to the WTG
- Participate in ongoing technical discussions with WTG OEMs and consultants to complete tasks supporting project development e.g. Validating WTG OEMs' site suitability report, technical evaluation, and clarification
- Support project execution teams (i.e., Construction) by aligning on risk/opportunity mitigation strategies defined during the technical due diligence of projects
- Plan the power performance test strategy and provide support as needed during execution.
- Through research and networking within the industry, we aim to establish an understanding of the evolution of onshore WTG and its sub-systems
- Evaluate the feasibility and potential benefit of adopting new technologies related to WTGs to support the growth ambitions of RWE
- Develop tools and methods to support department goals and initiatives
- Work with teams to drive process improvements by challenging the status quo
Job Requirements and Experiences:
- A Bachelor’s degree in electrical, civil, mechanical, or related engineering is required, and a Master's is preferred
- A minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience in wind turbine technologies
- Experience in the contracting of technical products and/or experience in project management, especially of wind farm projects or other infrastructure projects
- Proven specialist knowledge and/or relevant professional experience in wind turbine engineering, preferably from working for a turbine OEM or consultant
- Profound technical knowledge and/or relevant experience of WTG major components and subsystems (e.g., drive train, blades, controls, generator, towers, etc.)
- Ability to align technical requirements and project tasks with commercial objectives, ensuring a clear understanding of cost, risk, and business impact throughout project delivery
- Extensive knowledge of international rules and regulations applicable to wind turbines, such as the IEC61400 series, DNV GL standards, etc.
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to maintain confidentiality
- Proven ability to deliver results in complex projects with tight timelines
- Proven ability to empathize, build relationships, and effectively communicate with people from a diverse set of backgrounds
- Good knowledge of wind yield assessment, wind turbine loads, CFD software, Wasp, WindPRO, and Windographer will be an asset. Willingness to travel based on tasks, both nationally and internationally (expected travel time in general <25%)
Work Environment:
This position is office-based, with some travel and visits to other RWECE offices and field locations. The employee must be able to sit, walk, or stand for long durations of time.
Pay range: The annual base salary range for this position in Illinois is $117,700-$177,000. The listed salary range represents our good faith estimate for this position and represents the range for new hire salaries across all U.S locations. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. RWE considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s education & work experience, training & certifications, and key skills as well as market and business considerations at the time of the offer.
