Your future plans

The Real Time Power Trader will join a dynamic team responsible for maximizing the value of RWE’s growing portfolio of generation and storage assets across the US.

Our Short-Term Trading activities cover multiple nodal power markets, including ERCOT, PJM, MISO, SPP, NYISO, ISO-NE and CAISO. Based in downtown Chicago, this new role will be a key part of our expanding Short-Term Asset Optimization team.

The Real Time Power Trader is responsible for identifying and executing profitable opportunities in the real-time and real time markets while taking into account the physical characteristics, operational constraints and market positions of RWE’s assets.

The role combines real-time market expertise, asset-backed trading, quantitative analysis and AI-driven decision-making. Together with Day-Ahead Traders, Analysts, Dispatch and Asset Management, you will continuously optimize the portfolio as market conditions, forecasts and asset availability change.

AI is intended to become an integral part of how we optimize the US Short-Term portfolio — not a separate technology initiative.

Responsibilities

  • Execute asset-backed within-day and real-time trading strategies across US nodal power markets.
  • Develop, maintain and continuously improve AI/ML-driven models and analytical tools supporting real-time market analysis, forecasting and trading decisions.
  • Use AI and advanced analytics to identify market patterns, trading opportunities and deviations from expected asset performance.
  • Deploy trading capital based on data-driven insights while maintaining disciplined risk management.
  • Continuously reassess positions and optimization strategies as market conditions change, while monitor real-time market conditions, including prices, load, generation, congestion, outages, weather and transmission conditions.
  • Identify and capture real-time trading and optimization opportunities based on market movements, updated forecasts and asset availability.
  • Work closely with Day-Ahead Traders and Analysts to translate Day-Ahead and Bal-Day strategies into real-time trading decisions.
  • Support the continuous development and backtesting of trading strategies and evaluate their performance against relevant benchmarks.
  • Contribute to expanding RWE’s Short-Term Trading capabilities across additional US ISOs and markets.

Your Powerful Skills

  • University degree in Mathematics, Economics, Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science or a related field.
  • Experience with AI/ML, quantitative modeling or advanced data analytics, ideally applied to trading, energy markets or asset optimization.
  • Experience with Generative AI / Azure OpenAI, AI/ML model integration, enterprise data & analytics and cloud-based solutions is a plus.
  • Experience in an energy or gas trading environment, preferably with exposure to PJM, ERCOT, MISO, SPP, CAISO or ISO-NE nodal markets.
  • Strong understanding of US power markets, particularly Day-Ahead, Within-Day and Real-Time market dynamics.
  • Understanding of the commercial optimization of wind, solar, battery storage and thermal generation assets, as well as electricity transmission, gas transportation and forecasting.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical mindset with a clear focus on optimization, performance and value creation.

  • Comfortable making decisions in highly dynamic and uncertain market situations.
  • Self-confident and entrepreneurial approach, with the ability to take ownership and act decisively.
