The Wind Farm Technician I ensures safe and effective execution of all operations and maintenance activities of one or more wind farms and related renewable energy facilities, adhering to established policies and Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) protocols. This role is responsible for performing routine inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs of renewable energy systems and balance of plant equipment, while proactively identifying safety hazards and maintaining thorough documentation.

 

Working both independently and as part of a team, the Wind Farm Technician I supports continuous improvement initiatives, collaborates across departments, and assists with the implementation of technical solutions to enhance system performance. The position may also involve leading or mentoring junior staff, facilitating retrofit installations and complex repairs, and contributing to a culture of safety and operational excellence.

 

Role Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all operation and maintenance activities are performed safely and in compliance with site-specific policies, procedures, and Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) requirements
  • Demonstrate proactive safety behaviors, including consistently reporting hazards and adhering to company values and safety protocols
  • Lead installation, maintenance, repair, major component work, replacement, and troubleshooting, of renewable energy systems (including Solar, Wind, and BESS) as well as Balance of Plant (BoP) procedures such as substation and collection system maintenance
  • Conduct acceptance and performance tests, inspections, and detailed reporting following planned maintenance or outages
  • Lead and support large-scale retrofit installations, maintenance projects, and troubleshooting of complex technical issues
  • Perform root cause analysis and recommend solutions to address recurring technical issues and improve system efficiency
  • Collaborate on continuous improvement initiatives to enhance system performance and operational processes
  • Train, supervise, and support junior team members, promoting skill development and adherence to safety protocols
  • Serve as backup to personnel at other RWE sites and provide operational support as needed
  • Maintain accurate documentation and communicate findings to managers and stakeholders
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management, consistent with the role

 

Job Requirements and Experiences:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate degree or equivalent certification in renewable energy technology or electrical systems preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of technical experience in the renewable energy sector preferred
  • Involvement in advanced certifications preferred
  • Minimum 6 years of work experience in operations and/or maintenance in power generation, transmission and/or distribution, with at least 3 years of wind turbine experience
  • (Vestas, GE, Acciona, Nordex) Wind Turbine (Can be edited to include a certain WTG platform) Experience preferred
  • 2 year or 4 year college degree from an accredited school (other than correspondence or on-line) in a technical science like engineering, physics, power, or closely similar
  • Military experience in a technical field (electrical, electronics or mechanical)
  • Unrestricted driver’s license required
  • License or Certification experience substitutions include Current Journeyman, Current Master Electrician License, and Wind Tech Certificate
  • Knowledge and adherence to environmental and safety policies, procedures, and advanced risk analysis, including filling out JHA/LOTO/ forms and leading lockout/tagout (LOTO) for safety
  • Demonstrates proactive safety behavior and promotes safety for self and others at all times
  • Proficient in the use of hand and power tools and advanced understanding of electromechanical relays, hydraulic accumulators, linear transducers, electrical motors, power electronics, motor drives, and AC/DC converters
  • Able to read, interpret, and apply electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic circuit drawings and advanced schematics to optimize and troubleshoot renewable energy systems
  • Independently perform complex troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and repairs of electromechanical systems
  • Advanced knowledge of computer network communication protocols (desired)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams) and able to independently prepare and deliver technical presentations
  • Strong project management skills: able to work within tight deadlines, multi-task effectively, create, follow, and lead standard work instructions, and operate independently or as part of a team
  • Demonstrates initiative, is a motivated self-starter, and is goal-oriented with strong problem-solving abilities
  • Ability and willingness to travel to and from various job sites as assigned
  • Excellent communication skills; values collaboration and teamwork
  • Able to lead crane rigging and signaling operations and manage project documentation
  • Capacity to lead team efforts, supervise small teams, mentor junior staff, facilitate cross-departmental collaboration, and manage relationships with external stakeholders
  • Applies expertise in renewable energy systems and emerging technologies, including developing and implementing tailored safety protocols for complex projects
  • Provides strategic input for project planning and execution and designs solutions for high-impact challenges (grid integration, energy storage, etc.)
  • Must live within 1 hour drive time to site

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to maintain a body weight of 270 pounds or less to safely perform tower climbing and job-related duties.
  • Able to safely climb wind towers daily, open/close hatch doors, and identify potential safety hazards
  • Capable of working in confined, elevated, and swaying environments, including walking across small surface areas within turbines.
  • Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 50 lbs, and to walk, climb, and stand for extended periods in extreme environmental conditions (heat, cold, wind, sun).

 

Work Environment:

The work environment includes a variety of settings such as offices, warehouses, and wind farm site locations. Responsibilities involve working in and around energized wind turbine generators and balance of plant equipment (including substations and pad mount transformers), with tasks performed both inside turbines and outdoors in all weather conditions and changing environments, including unstable conditions.
