The Manager of Natural Gas Supply Portfolio is responsible for developing and managing a natural gas supply strategy for a growing fleet of natural‑gas‑fired power generation assets. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with deep expertise across natural gas markets, pipeline operations, and commercial negotiation.

 

This position will lead development of natural gas supply strategies, negotiations for natural gas supply agreements, firm transportation and storage arrangements, precedent agreements for new pipeline capacity, and energy management agreements with third‑party marketers to enable new projects. The successful candidate will participate in acquisition processes to evaluate supply options for existing assets and develop and implement integration plans if these assets are acquired.  The position will partner with RWE’s commercial optimization function to procure natural gas commodity, transportation, storage, and market operations to ensure reliable, cost‑effective, and flexible fuel supply for the portfolio of projects.  They will also partner with RWE’s commercial analysis and strategy functions to implement a market analytics and business intelligence platform to support decision‑making and optimize the company’s fuel procurement strategy.

 

Role Responsibilities:  

  • Natural Gas Supply Strategy & Portfolio Management
    • Develop and execute a comprehensive natural gas supply strategy that aligns with the company’s growing generation portfolio
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with natural gas producers, marketers, pipeline companies, and storage operators
    • Represent the company in commercial discussions, quarterly business reviews, and long‑term strategic planning with counterparties
    • Support M&A due diligence by assessing fuel supply flexibility, transportation contracts, pipeline connectivity, and operational risks
  • Commercial Negotiation & Contracting
    • Negotiate precedent agreements and expansion commitments with pipeline and storage developers for new power plant interconnections
    • Lead negotiation of natural gas supply agreements, transportation contracts (FT, IT), storage agreements, and balancing services
    • Ensure all agreements include appropriate commercial protections, risk mitigation mechanisms, and performance obligations
  • Market Analytics & Business Intelligence
    • Build a business intelligence platform integrating pipeline flow data, pricing indices, capacity postings, LNG flows, weather models, and market fundamentals
    • Evaluate sourcing, transportation, storage, and balancing options to optimize cost, reliability, and flexibility
    • Develop dashboards and analytics to support decision‑making, dispatch optimization, budget planning, and hedging strategies
    • Provide daily, weekly, and long‑term analysis of natural gas market conditions, price drivers, operational risks, and regulatory developments
  • Operational Support & Scheduling Oversight
    • Establish forecasting processes for existing and future plants, incorporating plant dispatch economics, market dynamics, and regulatory considerations
    • Establish processes for natural gas scheduling with Commercial Optimization function
    • Coordinate with plant operations to anticipate fuel needs and manage supply disruptions
    • Monitor pipeline maintenance schedules, tariff changes, and operational constraints and their potential impacts on plant operations
    • Troubleshoot fuel delivery issues, pipeline constraints, storage withdrawal limitations, and other operational challenges
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Partner with the Development team to evaluate gas supply and pipeline access for new-build projects and inform plant siting decisions
    • Partner with Finance and commercial optimization to support budgeting, forecasting, hedging, and risk management
    • Partner with commercial optimization on strategy and execution of said strategy

 

Job Requirements and Experiences:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Economics, Finance, or related field; MBA preferred
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in natural gas supply, trading, origination, pipeline commercial operations, or power‑sector fuel management
  • Deep understanding of U.S. natural gas markets, regional basis dynamics, and pipeline operations
  • Significant experience negotiating gas supply agreements, transportation agreements, and/or precedent agreements
  • Ability to interpret pipeline tariffs, capacity postings, and market fundamentals
  • Experience working with gas scheduling, balancing, and operational fuel logistics
  • Ability to build strong relationships across the natural gas value chain—suppliers, pipelines, storage providers, and marketers
  • Proficiency with market analytics platforms (e.g., Genscape, Enverus, BTU, NGI) and strong data skills (Excel, BI tools)
  • Experience building analytics dashboards or data platforms (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Python-based tools)
  • Experience supporting natural gas‑fired power generation assets

Pay range: The annual base salary range for this position inIllinois and Boston is $126,000 - $180,000   . The listed salary range represents our good faith estimate for this position and represents the range for new hire salaries across all U.S locations. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. RWE considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s education & work experience, training & certifications, and key skills as well as market and business considerations at the time of the offer.
